Earth Day Excursion 2026

The City’s Transportation Department will host the Earth Day Excursion during this year’s Earth Day Festival on Sunday, April 19, 2026. New this year is an interactive e-scooter and e-bike guided tour dedicated to increasing awareness of sustainable transportation options

 What to Expect:

Micromobility vendors Spin and Lime will provide the devices for this excursion, and the City’s Transportation Department will provide each participant with a grocery bag or a fanny pack and a SpendaBull gift card to use at one of the local businesses we will ride to.

The vendors will lead two guided tours for participants from Durham Central Park, located on Foster Street, to the CBC Plaza on Parish Street. The ride is 0.3 miles and can take 2-5 minutes, depending on your e-scooter or e-bike’s pace. Below is a map of the route.

The first group will depart at 1:30 and return to Durham Central Park by 2:45.

The second group will depart at 3:30 and return by 4:45.

Helmets and protective gear, such as reflectors and vests, will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Priority will be given to those who registered for the event.

Please note that all participants must be at least 18 years old.

How to Sign Up:

Participants can sign up online in advance. Slots are first-come, first-served for both time slots. There are limited spots for walk-ins. You can select either an e-scooter or an e-bike under your preferred time slot.

How to Use Your SpendaBull Gift Card:

Each confirmed participant will receive a $10 SpendaBull Gift Card. SpendaBull is Downtown Durham’s official gift card, and it can be used at over fifty local businesses in Durham. View the full list of businesses on the SpendaBull website.

Why We’re Doing This:

Over the last few years, the City has expanded its micromobility options to provide residents and visitors with additional sustainable ways to get around Durham. The Earth Day Festival is an annual reminder of ways we can all reduce our carbon footprints. This excursion was created to show how one trip to a store, a coffee with friends, or other necessary errands can be completed using a sustainable mode of transportation.

The City’s Way to Go Durham program is committed to helping everyone learn about their transportation options, from riding the bus, finding a carpool partner, exploring a walking or biking route, or joining a vanpool. The program works through an initiative called transportation demand management (TDM), a collection of transportation-based strategies designed to reduce single-occupancy vehicle trips.
